Historically Speaking
In April 1890, 'Trustee's of The Roman Catholic Church of Sheridan' was formed. In 1894 the Trustee's became 'St. Patrick's of Fort Logan' parish. Fr. Ignatious Marie Grom is credited with starting the 'Little Mission'.
Fr. Brady became Pastor in 1896. He remained Pastor until 1939. Fr. Brady is also credited with starting St. Mary's in Littleton Colorado in 1900.
The first church building had two-foot thick walls, an almost flat roof, and square windows. It seated about 130 parishioners.
In 1942, the Chaplain at Loretto Heights College, Fr. Anthony A. Weinzapfel became pastor of St. Patrick's. When Fort Logan closed as an army base in 1946, Father Weinzapfel purchased a former barracks, had it placed on a new basement foundation next to the church, and remodeled it as a rectory. He converted part of it into a school, doing much of the carpentry work himself. Fr. Weinzapfel established a parish credit union in 1958. The following year, 1959, the old stone church was torn down and Holy Name Church was built.
The parish was officially renamed Holy Name on September 23, 1960.
The new church seated 800, and was first used for Christmas Midnight Mass. Father Weinzapfel retired in 1970, to be followed by Fr. McMahon (1971-1977) and Fr. Morfeld (1978-1990).
Fr. Nevans was appointed in July of 1990 and was the overseer of the building of the St. Agnes Center.
He was followed by Fr. Murphy in 1995. In 2004 Fr. Tom Woerth became interim Pastor until the arrival of our permanent and present Pastor, Fr. Vincent Phung in 2005.
